Person 1: Why are you pro-life? Person 2 (our hero): Because I support equality. I think all members of the human species are equally valuable, regardless of sex, race, size, age, or any other superficial characteristic.Person 1: Why are you pro-life? Person 2 (our hero): In short, I’m pro-life because I support equality. I think all members of the human species are equally valuable, regardless of sex, race, intelligence, or anything else.

Why Are You Pro-Life?

Be prepared to give a more comprehensive defense of the pro-life position, but this is a good soundbite. Given more time, explain that you’re pro-life because you think you have good arguments for the following three points. First, a fetus is an individual living human, biologically speaking. Second, every member of the human species is a person (a being with the same value, serious moral status, and basic rights that adults have). Third, the basic rights of persons include the right to not be killed through abortion.

Person 1 (our hero): I’d say there’s a certain fundamental equality between you, me, and billions of others. Person 2: Yeah, I agree. Person 1 (our hero): That’s kind of amazing. We’re all so different! We vary by race, sex, intelligence, etc. What do we have in common that makes us equal? Our hero: Racism, sexism, and homophobia are wrong because they devalue people based on superficial qualities. We’re all members of the human species, so we’re all equally valuable. Fetuses are members of the human species, too.Person 1: What does “pro-life” mean? Person 2 (our hero): It means I think we all deserve basic human rights even before we’re born. I oppose abortion; I think we should use nonviolent means to support pregnant women. Our hero: People are diverse. At the same time, we all equally deserve basic human rights, whether we’re rich or poor, male or female, young or old, etc. Why? We’re so different. What do we all have in common?
